I'm in the midst of researching towns for my last stop, most likely, and another post on Cleveland just impressed me enough to get a little more serious about looking at your town.

Can you all give me the best walkable neighborhoods, particularly more affordable ones with some diversity and funky creative vibe best of all? If I'm going to stick to a city, instead of indulging my country fantasies, then I want the best part of that, which is, to me, having pretty much everything you need within walking distance from home.

Anything you can offer would be a help, including negatives like where not to live. Since I've lived most of my life in cities, I won't be scared off by suburbanites who let crime heat maps scare them.

Good luck on your search.

I’d say Shaker Square-Larchmere:

Shaker Square Larchmere

Edgewater

Detroit-Shoreway

... all 3 walkable, with tons of services, restaurants and entertainment you can access on foot. Also, all 3 are transit friendly accessible to Cleveland rapid transit system. All 3 also are within walking distance of green natural areas and water, Shaker Square/Larchmere near the beautiful Shaker Lakes, the other 2, Lake Erie shore, Edgewater Park and beach.

OP, I don't know your definition of affordable, but the following areas offer (to varying degrees) what you describe in your message. Please note I cast a wide net, since I don't know your "needs:"

CLEVELAND
Asiatown
Clifton/Edgewater
Detroit Shoreway/Gordon Square
Downtown
Duck Island
Flats East Bank
Kamm's Corner
Larchmere
Little Italy
Midtown
Ohio City
Old Brooklyn
Shaker Square
Slavic Village
Tremont
University Circle
Waterloo/North Collinwood

CLEVELAND HEIGHTS
Cedar-Fairmount
Cedar-Lee
Cedar-Taylor
Coventry Village
Fairmount-Taylor

LAKEWOOD
Birdtown
Detroit Avenue Corridor
Downtown
Gold Coast
Madison Avenue Corridor

ROCKY RIVER
Old River

SHAKER HEIGHTS
ShakerTowne Center/Chagrin-Lee
Sussex
Thornton Park
Van Aken District

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS
Cedar Center
Fairmount Circle

Hope this helps!

DR J

Define "everything" in this context. I have yet to find a Cleveland-area neighborhood that has "everything" I desire within walking distance. (Downtown Lakewood comes the closest, however.)

narrowing to more the basics of being able to walk to grab a bite or a drink and then sundry other small businesses, like hair, drycleaner, pharmacy, etc. a neighborhood that doesn't have to have everything, but most of the smaller eat or drink or carry in a bag home type stuff.

another good question. essentially the cheaper the better, but without it being depressing. under $100k would be fantastic with a buck and a half or a little more being fine, but going over $200k would sort of defeat the purpose of cleveland for me, to be honest.. i should also add, as i'm starting to research further, that i'd be looking for a small house with a maybe a decent sized lot, though that ain't a must, since i like to play in the dirt and would ideally like to have room for some fruit trees.

came back to add that i'm also something of a diy-er, so finding that super cheap good bones house in decent hood is actually the ideal.

and thanks so far. it's genuinely appreciated. you've given me some stuff to look at, particularly the fine doctor. i gotta say this forum is peachy for being able to get some quality information at a distance and for you clevelanders yourselves, it's really nice to hear such across the board civic pride. it really does add to my, and i'm sure others, interest both in moving to and visiting your city.
