Did he do it or not? Many of us Americans have been living here for years without a problem. We are very aware of corruption here, though. Either way, he is quite unlucky. Is there anyone claiming he has never been in trouble or hung out with a bad crowd?

Perhaps carefully go through luggage before entering airport security, as items can be planted in luggage by taxi drivers, etc.

Medical price gouging apparently also is common, especially in Mexico.

Poor guy. That’s terrible. I went to Thailand 22 years ago. Now I prefer safer countries like Europe.

Medical price gouging happens every minute of the day..in the US. Terrible story, and Mexico is generally much scarier than Thailand. There were close to 40 million international arrivals in Thailand in 2019. The bullet thing happened twice in the last few months. The other guy was from Pennsylvania. He is back home, but he is not denying it, as far as I have read. Some things point to a scam, others do not. Usually, scams involve you paying to avoid the criminal justice system. In Michael's case, he was charged judicially, granted bail, and hired a lawyer of his family's choosing. Often in these situations, families find out that the US Embassy will not intervene in the judicial process, and the truth is they are of way less help than people think. They have a list of lawyers, and in Bangkok a few years ago, they had an American lawyer on their preferred list that had never been to law school of been a member of any bar, and was a known *********.

Too bad. Thailand is usually very self-conscious about its image to tourists, it's a huge industry for them.

Could be up to 20% of GDP, if you include expats living here and foreigners buying real estate. They do seem to have a culture of shooting themselves in both feet, though. The far reaching effects of social media are just about reaching critical mass.
