I believe it's around 16 now. This time last year we had around 30 so it's almost a 50% drop. Even Cincinnati and Columbus have more homicides this year so far. If the pace keeps up we might actually get under 100 for the 1st time since 2004, good news.

Previous years:
2005- 114, 2006- 119, 2007- 135, 2008- 102, 2009- 120

That is good news. When I was recently in Cleveland, I noticed they have new "safety ambassadors" downtown. I have noticed this in other cities across the country. This probaly helps with little things happening in the central business district. I am sure most of, if not all of, the homicides are happening in the eastern part of the city.

There are homicides on the West Side in certain areas where it's gang controlled or heavily into drug sales.. If you look at the homicide map in Cleveland, you can see the areas pretty distinctively compared to the madness on the east side. The Cudell area is pretty bad, as well as Clark-Fulton just south. Madison area was bad, a gang called Madison Madhouse was responsible for a lot of assaults, homicides, and robberies. W130th and Bellaire area which is around Linndale is very sketchy as well. I'd say those are the worst in my experience and places I tend to stay away from, especially at night.

Here's the map, it's clearer if you zoom. The Clark Fulton area is definitely the worst and actually probably one of the more dangerous in the entire city.

1 in Akron - Akron man shot to death during fight | cleveland.com
Police kill man in bedford - Police shoot man brandishing meat cleaver in Bedford Sikh temple | cleveland.com

Most years it's about 2/3 on the Eastside and 1/3 on the Westside. There is some bad areas on the westside where murders are pretty common, wesohood mentioned most of them. The Madison area (cudell) out to about 110th south to clark/lorain ave, stockyards neighborhood south to denison, my neighborhood clark-fulton (there was 6 murders last year in a 2 block radius of 25th and clark), 130th and Bellaire area, etc. That homicide map and list only includes about 75% of the homicides and the map usually doesn't even load all of them (try refreshing the page several times) but you can get a basic idea of where the murders occur.

115th and St. Clair, and 103rd and Elk (north of St. Clair). That should be 20 or 21.
