Carolina Beach State Park - Coast

Fort Fisher State Recreation Area - Coast
Barrier island between river and Atlantic Ocean is home to
rare and endangered coastal birds and endangered
sea turtles.

ocean fishing, ocean swimming.

Short hiking trail past World War II bunker to scenic overlook.
Fort Macon State Park - Coast
Restored historic fort that played a key role in Civil War,
barrier island beach. Exhibits and fort tours, Civil War
reenactments during warmer months,
interpretive programs. Ocean swimming, ocean and inlet
fishing, picnicking, short hiking trail. Accessible beach overlook.
Hammocks Beach State Park - Coast
Undeveloped barrier island, dunes up to 60 feet, 3.5 miles
of ocean beach, maritime forests, salt marshes,
tidal creeks, endangered sea turtles.
Accessible only by boat; park operates a seasonal passenger ferry.
Fourteen backpack family campsites, three backpack group campsites.
Ocean swimming and fishing.
Visitor's center with exhibits, interpretive programs.
Short hiking trail across island; hiking along shoreline.
Jockey's Ridge State Park - Coast
Tallest sand dune along U.S. Atlantic Coast, large
dune system, barrier island ecology.
More than two miles of hiking trails.
Hang gliding, sandboarding, kite flying. Swimming, fishing,
kayaking and sailboarding in Roanoke Sound.
Eight picnic shelters, visitor's center with exhibits,
interpretive programs.
Right now the marina is closed for rebuilding and I think also the area near the river is blocked out to public access at Carolina Beach State Park. I'm not sure what parts are open but anyone thinking of going should call and get an update. Also, camping is now by reservation.
Though it's a national park, not state, there's all sorts of trails, swimming and camping opportunities in the Croatan. Including Flanners Beach, Pine Cliifs along the Neusiok Trail ending at the estuary at Oyster Point, which has a camp ground and is about 5mi from the ocean proper. The croatan also has off road trails for ATVs and dirt bikes. The beaches along the Neuse (and all the crreks shooting off it in this area, are sandy, and the river is wide. So wide even the creeks (looking at Slocum) are larger than most rivers. Look at the pics at the Flanners Beach link below.
