Coming from Silver Spring, MD to Duck on Saturday - what time should we leave - planning on taking 301 down to 95 and then............. well, any advice on which was to go (stay on 95, avoid 95, etc, etc).

What time should we leave to avoid sitting in traffic for-evah?

I'm sure this has been replied to before but I cannot seem to find anything specific to Maryland. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Can't wait and if anyone has suggestions on where to eat/what to do with a 5 and 3 year old - I'm all ears!!!

well I'm no expert but just did the drive to Corolla from Northern Virginia a month back (not peak though...6/19) and we had no traffic at all...of course we drove down to Chesapeake on Friday night so we could get a heads start Saturday morning. I was told you have to get over the bridge by noon, but frankly we were there at 11:30 Am or so and it was completely fine with heavy but definitely moving traffic. We had a worse time driving down to Chesapeake on Friday....tonnnnnns of traffic everywhere, took us 6 hours to do a 4 hour drive. 95 was actually moving though.

So not alot of advice, but I'd suggest leaving at the crack of dawn and then probably just stay on 95 until the Richmond area and then you do a bit of jigin an jaggin', but I'm sure you have the directions...honestly 95 for us both ways, wasn't as bad as some of the other roads (64 in particular was HORRIBLE both directions).

If you're taking 301 (I'm assuming using 495 to MD 5 to get to 301), I don't think I'd even rejoin 95. I'd probably take 301 to 17 to 64 to 664 in the Hampton Roads. This would shave about 20 miles off your trip.

17 is, for the most part, rural 4 lane divided highway with few stoplights. It gets a bit more crowded as you get closer to the Hampton Roads.

I've head the best times to get to Duck are before noon or after 5, so I would plan accordingly. If you want to get there by 12 from Silver Spring, I'm thinking that means leaving around 6:30 in the morning, maybe earlier if you drive slow or plan to stop a lot.

Of course, if you're going to leave so early in the morning, you might as well skip 301 and just take 95 all the way down. 95 shouldn't have heavy traffic at that hour.

Thanks so much for the advice/suggestions - I think we're going to do the 301 to Rt 17 ziggy zaggy thing. We're leaving at 5:30 and eating "breakfast" in the car and just plowing through with hopefully 2 quick potty/snack stops. Can't wait until tomorrow!
