And I didn't even touch on the sad state of affairs in education. And it's not for want of money. There is plenty of money. It the attitudes of some teachers, parents and students. Why do only 10% of students at Pitt Community College end up graduating? That's a 90% drop out rate! and the huge majority of those students are getting government grants. If you're not going to bother finishing school stop wasting money that might go to students that want to learn.
Why does a certain group of parents fight having a new scchool built "tooth and nail"? The current school is almost 100 years old and is getting ready to fall down. It has asbestos, a failing septic system, an antiquidated electrical system and the roof leaks like a seive.
They fight it because they don't want the 6th to 8th graders to go to middle school. Huh? What? They prefer to keep the K-8 graders all in the same school. The reason? You know it. Because it's always been that way. It was like that when the parents werre little and they'd rather risk a wholesale tragedy like the school burning down when it's occupied than send the 6th to 8th graders to a new seriously under capacity middle school right up the street.
You need to get away from the Crystal Coast and OBX Mr. Real Estate Agent.
I am in each- Carteret, Craven and Pamlico Counties a minimum of twice a week. Add in Craven and Beaufort Counties at least twice a month.
My daughter went to ECU (Pitt County), my niece currently goes to ECU and up until a year ago my Doctor was in Greenville (Pitt County).
For 25 years I was involved in the TV/Film industry. Due to the nature of what I did I was in everyone one of the 20 CAMA (Coastal Area Mangement Act) counties along eastern North Carolina at least once a year. Some counties dozens of times a year.
I have literally walk on, drove on, flown over, boated across every inch of the NC coast. (I averaged approx. 100-120 trips a year for 15 plus years).
I get away from the Crystal Coast Mr. Martin. I invite you to get away from Greenville. In fact-Give me a call and visit me here in Morehead. I'd enjoy that.
God Bless!
Bill

Not that I don't believe you, but i'm more curious if only 10% graduate with the major they started college with. I know when I was in engineering school, more than half dropped out of engineering by their sophomore year.

I've been to Morehead many times. Thank You for the invite. Although I haven't been over every inch of ENC I have been over way more than most of the people that have lived here their whole lives. I once met a 30 something woman in Washington that had told me she had never been to Greenville. I don't know if she was telling the truth but she certainly seemed sincere.
The OP asked a simple question. I only answered it. There are plenty of great things about ENC, I have answered those questions repeatedly over the years here and defended the area like it was my own. I'm just flipping the coin for a change. I am able to take my rose colored lenses off once in a while.
Iv'e lived in SE NC for 2 1/2 years and love it. 8 years prior to that we found this great place. I have heard and concor, I wish I could'a, should'a, would'a moved here sooner.
The statistic quoted represents students that have received a degree or certificate within 150% of full time attendance. It does not consider students that go to school part time or transfer to a 4 year school. Pitt is not alone, Wake and Durham's CC are also 11 and 10%, as are others. The CC system goes out of its way to include nontraditional students that just want to learn and those that need 1 or 2 prerequisites for other (under)graduate programs. Not to mention the tuition rate cannot be beat.
There are many reasons to bash ENC but this is not one of them.
