I am looking to take my father and son (12) on a day trip fishing boat in early October. My father would like to catch "something big". I have never done off-shore fishing in NC (or really anyplace for that matter). What types of big fish can be caught on a day trip? What are really good fighting fish?
We will be staying in Carolina Beach, does anyone have any recommendations for boats there or Wrightsville or even possibly Southport?
One of my best friends (Mark) is a mate on a charter fishing boat that goes out of Carolina Beach. I just talked to him today and he pulled in a 35lb wahoo only about 37 miles out earlier this week. It's rare to catch a wahoo outside of the gulf stream, so he was psyched. Obviously not a huge fish, but exciting nonetheless.
I can't recall who he mates for, but I'll check. They do gulf stream runs, though it's a fairly long haul from CB.
Jeff,
If this is a first time trip for you, father and son I might suggest an inshore trip for trout, drum, flounder or something off the beach like kings. Blue water trips out of SE NC can be long haul. The last thing you want is for anyone to get sick while out in the deep 2-4 hours away from shore.
Bill
kings are close in during that time...usually within 12 miles of the beach
easy to catch if you have nice live bait
