Best place for Self employed contractor (mortgage, good schools, to live)

Hi,

We currently live on long island - the hamptons area and are considering a move to NC.

Our main reason for moving is that I want to become a SAHM and we cannot do this if we stay on LI as our mortgage is too high.

So we are going to go to NC in the coming weeks to check out some areas.

As we live near the beach now our ideal would be to live as close to the beach as possible in NC. I know things are diff down there with hurricanes etc so maybe if any of you could recommend a place withing driving distance but safe that would be great ( probably asking for the impossible here)

My husband is a self employed contractor and that is the line of work he would be in in NC. Any areas better than others for this?

As I would be a SAHM my concerns are safety, nice place to raise a family, good schools, doctors etc.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated as we are planning our first of what I am sure will be many trips to NC and I have NO idea where to start.
