Just an update...

I have a job waiting for me in Greenville. My girlfriend and I are going to be moving to Greenville/Winterville in a few months (maybe sooner if she gets a teaching job).

I've been reading a lot of negativity about there being nothing to do for young adults in Greenville, but I think we'll be OK with it. We live in rural southwestern PA right now. It's literally a 30-minute drive to a mall, movie theatre, or ANY decent shopping, and a 40-minute to hour-long drive (depending on traffic) to Pittsburgh. Having so many amenities so close (even if they are a relatively small mall and a bunch of fast food restaurants) will actually be new and refreshing to us.

We're certainly going to take advantage of the closest beaches and the warmer climate. Also, I went to Penn State for four years, so I look forward to being in another community that supports its college athletics like Greenville does with ECU.

I just hope my girlfriend can find some things to keep her busy. Do you think she'll have any issues locating a scrap-booking club or a book club or something similar to meet new people?

Thanks for all the help!

There are hundreds of clubs and organizations in Pitt County. The truth is only those that don't actually want to find something to do have a problem finding something to do.

Thank you!

That is a great resource for someone new to the area.

I'm really looking forward to the move. It'll be nice to go to an area that is young and growing (Greenville) as opposed to one that is old and dying (southwestern PA).

Hi bgeno, just wondering how things worked out for you. My sister and I are looking to relocate, possibly around Greenville as well. We live in Southwestern PA near Pgh also and our situation sounds similar to yours. Did your girlfriend get a teaching job? I am looking for one too, but am not having any luck. Thanks!

Funny you bumped this thread because I was just thinking of updating someone on our situation... lol.

We're moving to Greenville at the end of the month!

She was never able to land a teaching job, but we're hoping that her resume and credentials draw more interest next year when she has an NC address and is able to meet whenever employers want. She has a job waiting at the same company I work for. That should suffice financially and hold her over until a teaching job pops up.

For those familiar with the area:

It looks like Atlantic Beach is the closest touristy beach that we could hit up in a day trip. Am I correct? We just want to be able to go somewhere and sit on the beach, enjoy the sun, take a dip in the water, and maybe take in some authentic seafood. Is there anywhere closer that would be as good as Atlantic Beach?

Thanks for the info. I've given up at this point and not having a NC address does seem to affect it. I'll look into subbing to get my foot in the door and will find another part-time job. Thanks and I'm glad it seems to be working out for you!

Once you get settled in Greenville and depending on your situation, your wife may want to go for some master's degree in teaching. I am not in that field, but it couldn't hurt.

The whole Atlantic Beach/Morehead City area is THE beach for day tripping in Greenville. Everyone here goes there.
