There used to be some excellent clamming down around Oak Island. My mother in law would frequently fry them. They were great but rather similar to HOJOs, but maybe more meat and tasted better. Not at all familiar with the bellies bit
If you don't like our clams try some que. Sure you will like that.

Cool Fried Clams

I spent the first 30 years of my life in the Boston Ares (South Shore) I now live in L.A. The first thing to remember is that clams have a soft shell. The others (Little Neck and Cherrystones.) are quohogs. Now both are great. But Ipswich (Soft shell) are best for frying. But look ugly. There have some off color jokes as to what that black thing you have to peal is. Anybody who has seen one knows what I mean. The others are good for chowder or just steaming. Some of the best places I have been to are The Red Wing in Walpole, Lynde's in N.H. or any place in Nantasket.

I think the Riverview in Sneads Ferry serves some fried clams, but I am not sure what kind they are. The Riverview uses mostly local seafood, and it is quite good if you like everything fried.
