We are going to take a look around the town and then take the ferry to Ft. Fisher.
Any words of wisdom? I am told it is not walkable to the aquarium once you get off the ferry. Are there other options?
Any good lunch places in Southport? This will be our first visit. Traveling with a 5 and 8 year old.

I would highly recommend the Provision Co. for good eats in Southport. Great atmosphere!

I have been visiting Southport/Oak Island area since 1989 and we are actually getting ready to move down in the next year as soon as we can. Restaurants - Fishy Fishy cafe, Provision and the Cape Fear Restaurants are all good and are on the water (Fishy Fishy has really good key lime pie, and Cape Fear has the best Death by chocolate cake).

As for the ferry boat crossing, it is a bit far to walk to the aquarium. I see a path just as you go around a bend that I think might lead directly through to the parking lot of the aquarium but as far as distance, might still be far for walking. Have you considered riding a bike?

If you drive over, and you have time, drive past the aquarium towards Carolina Beach, Kure beach and Wilmington. I am not sure the distance, not too far and before you reach an area known as Monkey Junction, is a small zoo. AWESOME place for the kids, I have taken my daughter and niece there for years and continue the tradition now with my grandkids! Here is the link

Tregembo Animal Park

Where are you staying when in Southport? A short drive from there is Oak Islands only Oceanfront hotel, the Ocean Crest Hotel. Unless we are staying with my parents, that is where we go and the staff and accommodations are great.

Have a great time!!

Take your car with you over on the ferry----the aquarium is great. I agree that the Provision Co. is a fun place to eat, and has beautiful water views. The Maritime Museum might be open---lots of cool pirate stuff.
We love Southport.

it is totally possible to walk from ferry to aquarium.
it is at most 1 mile of a walk from the ferry landing at fort fisher to the aquarium ,
half of that is done on a beautiful trail thru the woods.
it can be done , what i think would be hard is getting to the ferry landing on
the southport side by foot, looong way out of town.

it might be pushing it if you also want to visit the fort fisher civil war museum, that would add another
mile onto the walk.

we have done this on our bicycles, fun except as always the majority of car drivers
don't know how to handle bikes on the road.
have a great time.

We walk with our kids all the time, at least a few miles, so I think we may go for it! Thanks!

We are considering a move that way from the Raleigh area since my husband does not want to go back to Maine. I miss the coast of Maine for than anything, so this may be a good compromise!

if used to walking then I think you guys should do fine. You can park your car on the southport side and get on the ferry and ride over. Have a great time!!
