The closet you are going to get to Wrightsville is the KOA in Wilmington. Its not bad, kind of small but it's a campground. Its also close to the main road. We stayed there a few weeks ago and it wasnt bad.

Carolina Beach state park (as previously mentioned) is right there at Kure Beach (the pier). Probably the closet you are going to get. There is one place near the Outer Banks (I think) that you can actually camp on the beach itself. You have to take a ferry over and be okay with no toliets (got to dig a hole) if thats the kind of camping you're into.

You can camp right in the dunes at Hammocks Beach State Park north of Camp Lejeune. They also have nice toilet/shower facilities. You do have to kayak or ride the "ferry" over, but it is very secluded with only a handful of camping permits being granted each night.

Hammocks Beach is an hour and a half drive from Wilmington.

I'm well aware of that, hence why I stated the location. They didn't say how far they wanted to travel, so I figured I'd offer it as a suggestion since it really is a great place and not too far of a drive.

Camping is permitted on the North end of Carolina Beach. You can either drive onto the beach with a four wheel drive vehicle (provided you have a season pass or pay the entrance fee) or walk you gear in for free. Bathrooms (port-a-potties) are on the beach but no showers. Fires are allowed below the water/tide line. Enjoy your camping trip!!

How about Masonboro island? It's across the south inlet. You'd have to either kayak or get somebody to ferry you.
I think there are a couple of ferry services that bring people over. (probably only during summer). Off season one of the kayak outfitters might carry you.

There's no water or anything else, but it's a beautiful place.

Aside from labor day and fourth of july, you'd probably be the only ones camping there.

Understand it's probably most suitable to backpack type camping.
