The N.C. Coastal Federation has asked Gov. Beverly Perdue to veto a bill that would permit construction of up to four terminal groins along the state's coast. The jetties are designed to protect against beach erosion, but the federation and other environmental groups say they worsen erosion elsewhere.

Interesting tid bit from the Wilmington Star News:

"The compromise doesn't specify where they should be built, setting up a race to see which towns can get the permits and financing in place first."

Groins/Jetties don't seem like a big deal but here's the basic problem they may create. All beaches have a natural sand flow that nourishes (renourishes) the beach. The flow generally speaking runs parallel to the beach. A groin/jettie is perpendicular to the beach. The end result is one side of the jettie builds up while the other side deteriorates.
