I am looking to move out of Arizona as a 20 year old single female and took an interest in Wilmington. I have always loved the east coast and wanted to desperately live there, I just have never been too sure about where exactly. Would Wilmington be a good fit for me? What is the crime rate like? I would love to live near the river or the beach, but either way would it be safe? Also, does it get really bad hurricanes? If this doesn't seem like a good place to live, what are your suggestions? I would love to hear them. Oh, by the time I move I will have my RN in nursing. I am almost done now so in the next 6 months or so I'd be moving. Thanks!
Wilmington does get hurricanes. It sticks out into the ocean and they come and twirl around and around and around sometimes. But I have a friend that has a mother in a rest home there and the last time there was a hurricane she was snug as could be in the big building and didn't even know there was a storm. For some reason the area just below Wilmington seems to be missed a lot.
The crime is not bad for a city of 100,000. But, please search through the forum and see how many people have written that they want to move to the coast, and how many of them have RN's . I think it would be a great fit for you if you can find a job. I think it would help to know geriatric nursing, as there are many retirees in the area.
As far as alternatives, Savannah, Charleston, SC and Virginia Beach are larger cities and would give you a similar experience.

My good friend moved there with her family a couple years ago. They loved the beach, it was reasonably priced and jobs within the medical field were plentiful. But coming from Colorado (where we are really spoiled), they were disappointed in the lack of outdoor activities. They said a lot of the local people were not too interested in the outdoorsy lifestyle and most activities centered around the water. That said, I don't see why they were complaining! I would love to move to the area myself
Yes, so many forget that City-Data has actual capsules of towns and cities, not just the forums. And of course, there is the usual Googling, Wikipedia, Chamber of Commerce website, etc to get basic info on a place. That can answer a lot of the general question you asked, then people on here can follow up with specific first-person cases.

None of us knows you, so we can't possibly tell you what a "good fit" something is for you. But reseach the area, hopefully take a vacation and visit, then decide whether it's worth pursuing further based on your own needs. While you're on the East Coast, you could check out several places in case somewhere else was an even better fit for you.
