My fiancé and I are planning on moving to Coastal North Carolina. I kind of have my heart set on Wilmington because of all of the research I've done on the city, but I've noticed that housing is fairly expensive. Does anyone have any other suggestions on coastal towns that would be suitable for a couple in their 20's with a good(decent) job market? Thanks in advance

You were ok until the job market caveat. There are much better locations on the coast than Wilmington, IMHO, but your skill set must match the demand...and many coastal locations don't have much demand. What do you do?

Jobs is the issue here. You can live just over the river in Leland and have significantly lower housing costs. And some homes you can buy with usda loans with zero down and pay same or less than rent.

However you'll have to line up a job in advance unless you have a nice savings account to get you through a long haul in case you can't find work.

A large portion of those moving here are from the NE and they find out housing to be inexpensive. It depends on where you're coming from. My home would be 2x as much in Northern Virginia in Fairfax County for example.

Maybe a senior member here will have job advice. Like LLN said, what do you do?

I'll say this. Living so close to the beach is amazing. You get free vacations every week going to the beach. Wonderful lifestyle here and a great goal to pursue ending up here whether it sooner or later. Just remember to bloom where you're planted.

If you plan on having kids at some point. I'd say Hampstead. Excellent family oriented area and convenient to both Jacksonville and Wilmington for work.

The job I do right now is a program coordinator for a program working with mentally handicapped. I love my line of work but would be willing to do anything. I live in northern Minnesota now and I am tired of the long winters, and the only water nearby is dirty lakes. My fiancé has a variety of skills as well and would be able to do whatever necessary. We are a young couple who are looking to experience a different part of the country and the south is exactly what I am looking for. I appreciate any and all feedback that is given.

You might also consider the Norfolk/Virginia Beach area, or Charleston, or Savannah. Virginia currently has a slightly better job market than Wilmington.

Virginia would work but with what you do, I think you would be able to find something in or around Wilmington. Also if you actually head south below Wilmington towards Carolina Beach there are some good affordable neighborhoods, got friends there.. Look down below shipyard ave and you could find stuff or just outside near castle hayne as well
