I did read up SunnyKayaks post. So I'll try to answer some of those questions. I'm currently living in Massachusetts with my 2 year old daughter and would like to move to the Currituck County area to be closer to my husbands work based out of Norfolk, VA. At the moment I do not have a definitive time frame for moving just trying to research the area prior to visiting. I'm fortunate enough to be a stay at home mom but I know my husband will be commuting to Norfolk Naval Base. I guess my questions are based mostly around the fact that everything I've read says the crime rate is low and the school systems are decent, is this true and a nice place to live? Also, are there any housing communities people might recommend? Since we will be relocating away from family I would love to live in a community setting with at least a playground, maybe a pool as well. We are able to spend up to around $400,000.00 looking at a single family home. I've done my research but am having a tough time finding answers on communities. I especially like the Moyock, Shawboro areas. Thank you in advance for your help.

A friend has retired to the town of Harbinger in Currituck County. That's too far to commute to Norfolk, but the friend loves the area. I would also suggest checking the school systems with a tool like schooldigger.com or greatschools.org .

You are looking in the right areas. Many people make that commute and its not bad. You can get a nice place for that amount. I love Currituck County. Best of both worlds. The brand new YMCA in Barco has a indoor and outdoor pool.
