I know of two homes with over 9-12 acres each for sale with homes on them. One is $165,000 with a detached single car garage and two other small outbuildings. This is the type of land you would want to at least hunt on on your own land. But there is an abundance of deer here in Carteret County.
Deer in ENC are generally going to be smaller than deer you are familiar with in Michigan. Southern deer just don't have to deal with the harsh winters and don't get as large.
I would also like to encourage you to look in the Newport area. 10-15 minutes from Morehead City, 25 minutes to New Bern, a little more rural than MHC, and schools are good. Keep in mind that school systems in NC are county-wide and there are only 3 high schools in Carteret County. If you are looking in the Newport zip code, your kids will end up at West Carteret or Broad Creek.
While there are bears in the National Forest, they aren't a concern for homeowners. I lived in the rural area of Newport for 24 years and never saw a bear.
