You will love it there---and there are handicap accesses to the beach, I use them because of a disability.
It is so peaceful and the fishing is great. We love to hang out at the pier in downtown Southport at night, nice breeze, lots of people fishing. We've been going there since 1989, driving down from CT.
There may be special "beach" wheelchairs for you to use, call the chamber of commerce and ask. People are extremely helpful everywhere. Have fun!! 43 days until we go back down.

Consider taking the Southport ferry one day over to Fort Fisher and going to the aquarium, Fort Fisher and even into Carolina Beach and hit Britt's donuts on the Boardwalk....your kids would have a great time with the rides on the beach at Carolina Beach...its very much a throwback beach town....just make sure to leave early enough to get home and take the ferry back. Its a great, inexpensive day trip for folks visiting Oak Island that is not the sprawling mess of the Myrtle Beach area.

As well, you may consider taking the kids to downtown Wilmington one day...you can park downtown and take a river taxi to the Battleship, there is a Serpentarium (if you like Snakes)...eat on the riverfront at Elijah's and grab ice cream at Kilwin's...an excellent day trip as well.

There are also good scenic boat trips from Southport that will take you out near Bald Head Island.

Strongly endorse visiting the USS North Carolina up in Wilmington. Easy trip from Oak Island, less than ah hour.
