Hello! I am a new homeowner in Corolla in the Outer Banks. I have it listed with a property management company, but want to help promote it myself. Have any other vacation rental owners tried free listing services? I found one last night that looks good - vacationrentalconnection.com. There are a ton of Outer Banks houses in there already, but before I try it I wanted to see if anyone else has any experience. Thanks for any help. This is our first year in a rental program and I'm worried about the housing market...

I rent my townhouse on Topsail Island during the summer. I haven't tried any of the free sites lately. I have two paid sites I use that do fine in filling my schedule - VRBO.com and Cyberentals - both having been bought up by Homeaway in the last couple of years. I'd encourage you to try out the free sites, it certainly can't hurt, but some that I tried brought no inquiries at all. Advertising my place on the internet certainly has been more successful than my experience with rental agents. I stuck with an agency the first two years, but after a summer with two weeks total rented I said I certainly couldn't do worse than that. I haven't looked back, I ussually have no trouble filling my high season.
