Me and my girlfriend are most likely moving to Wilmington in June.
I've always preferred state beaches/parks to public boardwalk-like beaches. I do like Wrightsville, but I'm wondering if there is anything similar to the Outer banks within an hour of Wilmington.
Something quiet with very long expanses of beach.

Thanks!

Check out Carolina Beach and Carolina State Park which has native plants of this state like Long Leaf Pine and Venus Flytrap. The beach has a boardwalk and dont miss Brits.

Bald Head Island is the quietest habitated beach in the area. Topsail on the south end is pretty quiet. The north end of topsail sometimes sounds like a military zone.

But one of the best places the locals use is Masonboro Island, which you would need a boat to get to and is not habitated. You can basically set up your own beach across the dunes and no one is there for miles. Do a google earth search of Wrightsville and pan south to the island below it...that's Masonboro Island. You can dock either toward the Carolina Beach inlet or Masonboro Inlet.

Is there an actual beach there?
We went down a couple months ago and went out as far as the aquarium but I didn't know if you could go any further.

There is a parking lot before the aquarium on the left. As you enter that parking lot (which is a public beach access) there is a gate to the right where you can drive out onto the beach if you have 4 wheel drive and pay a fee. You can go as far as you can drive....there have been stories of folks actually driving onto Bald Head Island during some tropical storms because the sand bar gets exposed by the wind blowing from different directions.

Awesome. Wasn't sure if for some reason it was only drive-on.
