I can't get over all the bickering that happens on these sites. I don't remember internal bickering like this from folks who have bought in the Ocean Ridge Plantation area......what gives?

I don't live in SJP, so there's no "internal" bickering. In fact, I wouldn't say there's any "bickering", period, just some loud mouth yankees acting like they're better than everyone else.

Back to the original question of SJP or OKI ..

SJP has 7/24 gated security. That doesn't make it 100% safe but residents generally do feel safe to walk at night, maybe leave their doors unlocked for short periods etc.

SJP has an a la cart menu of amenities if you love golf, tennis, boating etc and are willing to pay extra for use of those amenities.

SJP has a pretty strong sense of community with all kinds of clubs and activities, a dedicated EMS and fire department etc.

Outside of SJP, including OKI and surrounding areas, there are other gated communities, neighborhoods, country living, farms, and so on. SJP does not have the market cornered for any activity, especially golf and boating. There are many, many golf courses in the area as well as marinas, sporting clubs, fitness centers and so on.

You can live almost anywhere in Brunswick county or Myrtle beach and have access to what ever lifestyle you choose. There are many entrepreneurs on OKI that are involved all kinds of crafts and arts. It is not to say you could not do it SJP but some activities like restoring antique cars or perhaps running a pottery kiln might be better suited outside SJP.

The main question is: What kind of retirement lifestyle do you want? What are your interests? Will you be happy in a gated community that has a lot of rules? How far do you want to drive to the grocery store, restaurant etc? Are you very concerned about storms and flooding?

All these things come into play when choosing where you will live. There are far more good places to live on the NC coast than there are bad. Where you build has a lot more to do with your personality and budget than it does point A or point B.
