I am planning on buying a house in the Supply area as soon as my farm in the Raleigh area sells. I will be bringing a couple of dogs and numerous cats with me. Therefore I have been researching properties with at least 1/2 acre, rural, that back up to wooded areas, and will be fencing in the house dogs. Cats like to roam and that is why I want lots of wooded areas so they will not bother the neighbors. How welcoming will people be in rural areas to new people with lots of pets. Also any information on what might be roaming in the woods in the Supply area would be appreciated. We will be avoiding marshes and swamps.
I have heard that I can use a golf cart to drive to the beach if the necessary roads have a speed limit of 35 mph. Is this correct?

I don't think its possible to generalize about an entire area's attitude towards anything. I'm sure some people would be annoyed by your animals roaming, and others won't care.

Brunswick County has a law prohibiting animals from roaming free. You are required to keep them on your property. The county is also home to bears, coyotes and bobcats, so your cats probably wouldn't be coming home if they do roam.

Supply is a long way from the beach (via a golf cart). Here is the county ordinance on golf carts:

Apparently, it is legal to do what you describe, although I suspect it would be very difficult to find a route entirely on roads with a maximum speed limit of 35 mph. I think it would also be very unsafe.

Thanks for your quick answer. My cats don't roam a great deal, they stay close to the barn, but they do have trees to climb here. My dogs do not run free.
Thanks also for the golf cart info. Some of the prop. owners state in their ads that they golf cart to the beach and some say they are 3 to 5 miles to the beach. I guess that will have to be something I work on when we move. My husband is disabled and I thought that would be a way he could enjoy the beach easier.

Hate to say it, but outdoor cats are getting more and more scarce due to the influx of coyotes. Just saw on the news last night, not in NC, but a coyote went inside an open door to devour a man's dog. Domestic cats need to be domestic. Period. If you leave them outside, in a rural setting as is much of Supply, you are putting them at grave risk.

I would examine the "golf cart to beach" claim very carefully.

Good Luck.

Feral cats are not uncommon along the coast. I'm not sure how a domestic cat would fair if it ran into one.
