My wife and I are looking to move to North Carolina.. We currently live in Columbus Ohio. We have vacationed in ocean isle beach and enjoyed it. We aren't familiar with affordable real estate or which places are safe and which are not. We prefer to be closer to the ocean. We would like to move near the coast, but it doesn't need to be directly on the coast. Within 30-45 minutes is fine. Small town, where we could have some land would be great. We prefer not to be living like sardines either, as we enjoy privacy. We are working class people so money is tight...we're looking in the $100,000 and under range. Any help, advice, suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Are you going to need to find a job? If not, there are many small towns within 45 minutes of the coast with inexpensive real estate. Whiteville, Burgaw, Plymouth, Edenton, Vanceboro, Wallace. How small of a town are you looking for?

I will most likely be transferring from my job here to North Carolina. I guess I'm more concerned with safety than town size. Just like small town feel.

With your budget, you are likely to be limited to a manufactured home or a very small cottage. You could add Richlands and Beulahville to the above list of towns.

Coastal North Carolina is 300 miles long, and there hundreds of rural towns between the coast and Interstate 95. Some are impoverished and have nothing going on, but the recommended ones have at least some amenities. Are you sure you don't have other geographic limitations?

Don't have any geographical limitations, just preferences I guess. More than anything I'm just looking for a safe place for my family.

Avoid places like Kinston, Rocky Mount, Lumberton and anywhere else where you see lots of crime reports.

Most small towns in ENC are very safe. Just be aware that there can be drug manufacturing labs hidden in almost any rural area, even in places that look respectable.
