There are several potholes which have developed recently (and are growing) on the main road leading into my subdivision. My quest was to try and find out who is responsible for repairing the street ... and get them to fill the holes!

First try was the NC DOT, which maintains a searchable database of the "state-maintained" roads in NC. That was a dead-end ... street wasn't listed. Apparently the developer (whoever that was) didn't apply to the state DOT for them to take over the maintenance when the roads were first constructed years ago.

Next I tried the county government, only to find out that they don't do any street maintenance ... and since my subdivision is not within the incorporated limits of a city or town, another dead-end.

My subdivision is small (only about 30 or so homes) ... that was developed about 15-20 years ago as best I can determine. No homeowner's association (that might be responsible for road repairs) ... another dead-end.

So, my question ... has anyone else faced a similar problem? And if so, what avenue(s) did you pursue to get your potholes repaired?

Where I live, inside of city limits, NCDOT designs and builds the streets. The city's Public Services dep't maintains the streets, their paving/condition, and the drainage of them.

What city/county do you live in?

That is a good question. If you aren't in a city, and the county doesn't maintain them... I really don't know. If it isn't a state road, it probably falls on the subdivision.

For your sake I hope this isn't a case of "buyer beware."
