I heard that Lowe's Foods was planning to close the Southport location and build another store farther down Beach Road, somewhere around Family Dollar. Just scuttlebutt, not sure. There is a huge traffic volume on Beach Road and much closer to the east end of OI than the NC211/Midway Road location.
Lowe's Foods is moving its existing store at Highway 211 and "old" Long Beach Road to a new shopping center that will be built at the northwest corner of Highway 211 and "new" Long Beach Road.
Lowe's Foods #201, Five Oak Village, 4961 Long Beach Road Southeast, Southport, North Carolina 28461-8001

Lowe's Foods #201 will be the last of the two Brunswick County Hannaford stores to be in operation as store 200 is closing.
Revisiting the grocery trade area, there are supermarkets Lowe's Foods #201, Five Oak Village, 4961 Long Beach Road Southeast, Southport, North Carolina 28461-8001, and Food Lion #2223, 4891 Long Beach Road, Southport, North Carolina 28461-8712, and hypermarket Walmart Supercenter #2772, Tidewater Plaza, 1675 North Howe Street, Southport. North Carolina 28461-2610. Is there room in the trade area for supermarkets Harris Teeter and Publix to participate?
The shopping center that includes Lowes Foods #201 is the Live Oak Shopping Center, not Five Oak.
Also, the road segment that this shopping center fronts on was renamed as a result of the Long Beach Road Extension project. Live Oak Village is now on Old Long Beach Road Southeast, while Food Lion #2223, which opened in fall 2015, is on a newly built section of Long Beach Road SE.
Per a recent statement from Publix, their plans for a store in Oak Island have not been finalized. I do not know what the issues there are, but will let y'all know if construction starts or they decide to withdraw from the site.
Publix has not announced any additional North Carolina store locations since December. I have not heard where it stands with possible locations in Oak Island, Ocean Isle Beach, and elsewhere in Brunswick County.
A driveway permit to be issued by the North Carolina Department of Transportation may be the delay. Has the permit been issued yet?
The article mentioned a fifth Publix store in consideration for Brunswick County.
