Check the airport connections as part of your decision process. The smaller ones have 6-12 flights daily to Atlanta or Charlotte where you can connect to other flights. Myrtle Beach also has flights to LaGuardia (NYC) and Florida. Wilmington has one flight to Philadelphia. Charleston has the best connections, with non-stop flights to 24 airports and 19 cities. https://www.chs-airport.com/Flights/Destinations.aspx
I have found it a hassle to travel out of the Jacksonville, NC airport where you have to transfer in Charlotte or Atlanta to go anywhere north or west. You might experience a similar hassle, based on where and how frequently you travel.

JoeD - you must not be concerned with hurricanes I assume? Saw more in the 9 years I lived in Eastern North Carolina than the 30+ years in SW Florida.
One can't live anywhere on the coast if one wishes to avoid hurricanes. And they don't pop up out of nowhere. There is plenty of time to evacuate.
In any event, NC hasn't had a major (category 3 or higher) hurricane make landfall since 1996. Florida has had 6. Its nice that you haven't been effected, but that doesn't make Florida better or safer.

Hurricane Floyd in September of 1999 left dozens of cities flooded in North Carolina when the local rivers overflowed their banks. My friend who lived near Kinston send me a special issue magazine that showed all the homes, farms, etc. under water.
For some reason the area I live in Florida has been protected from hurricanes due to its location in Florida and some other scientific reasons.

Yes, Floyd caused much destruction via flooding. It was a Category 2 storm.

if you consider coincidence a scientific reason then you are correct.
