We're northern transplants living in the Atlanta area and are ready for a slower pace near water. We're considering the Wilmington area. Thanks for all the great posts about living in the Wilmington area. We've visited and like what we've seen.

Being semi-retired we'll have some time to make some friends. Although we like ALL types of people, we're thinking it would be nice to mingle with Midwesterners again. I understand there's lots of NY/NJ/CT etc in Wilmington. Will we fit in? Are there any folks from places like IL, WI, MI etc?

We're also considering SW coast of FL, but have reservations about living there year round. What to do??

Any thoughts or recommendations would be most appreciated!

I know there are a few Midwesterners. We have one set of neighbors from Ann Arbor, MI who are the resident liberals. Other military folks have originated in Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, and they are conservatives. We generally don't talk about politics or religion, and we find other common interests.

I would not worry too much about your reception. Most retirees are welcoming to other retirees. Perhaps the New Jersey crowd tend to be overwhelming in St James Plantation, but there are certainly other communities to consider.

FWIW, I could not live in Florida with year-round heat. But there are folks like my SIL & BIL who think the winter weather is too cold in North Carolina so they have an inexpensive winter place in Clearwater.

I'm in Minneapolis, MN and will be moving to Wilmington this summer. When I visited the area I got a lot of "You're from WHERE!?" This was mostly in the various plantations, not Wilmington. Even the desk clerk in Ocean Isle asked how I'd heard of the area. At least we'll be unique.

I can't imagine anyone will have any issue with the fact you moved to the area from the midwest.

Well, I'm originally from Louisville, Kentucky born and raised and moved to Virginia at age 35. Now at age 57, I have three years till retirement from the Federal Government, I'm a connservative, and I can't wait to retire to Brunswick Forest. Everyone there has relocated from somewhere. I figure if I can move from Kentucky to Northern Virginia, North Carolina will be a breeze. And my dad lives in Florida, so I'm closer to him than I am here. Retirement can't come soon enough!

In my Wilmington neighborhood alone, I know folks from Ohio, Nebraska, Michigan, Minnesota, Indiana... Those are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head! Yeah, we have folks from the Midwest!
