Alrighty, I did some research and it looks like Carolina Beach and possibly Oak Island meet the criteria and have rental properties available. For Oak Island, I see a lot of negative reviews; however, most were in 2012. Any opinions about living on Oak Island?
Oak Island has more than its share of property crimes like break ins and thefts of opportunity such bicycles disappearing, etc. A lot of that happens during the off season when the island is much emptier compared to the tourist season. If you take standard precautions I don't think it would be a huge problem, but you do have to be aware.
OKI also has a small number of decent restaurants, especially considering its summer population. Currently, the only grocery store on the island is a Food Lion. Publix has announced plans to build a store that will open next year. The west end of the island is far from shopping, restaurants, etc.
There is definitely a drug problem here. And I'm talking the scary stuff, meth, heroine, ect...I have lived here almost 10 years. I am relocating soon because I don't want my son to be part of it. There are a lot of problem kids here. Directly because of their lack of good parents. It is easy not to see it immediately if you don't have teens or don't like going out to bars. I had a friend killed here in July by two 19 year olds looking for money to buy meth. The police care about drunk driving, there are license checks everywhere. They ignore the drugs and troubled kids. The largest percent of the high crime rate here is these kids, drugs and petty theft. (vandalizing and burglary of empty beach houses, stealing things out of new construction, ect...)
Its hard to describe the difference between Carolina Beach and Oak Island without sounding negative, but one of your main differences would be Carolina Beach has much more of a nightlife and "downtown" than Oak Island, which is really spread out. There are much better restaurants and bars in CB than in OI.
The Beach is completely different as well, CB faces W to SW, while OI faces due south, with not much wave action.
Both are considered working class beaches, however I would say CB is gradually transforming itself into a destination place...with another large hotel going up on the Oceanfront.
I would describe CB as being fun, while OI is more laid back.

Hello - I had to do a reality check on this one, as I had never heard of a murder on Oak Island. It turns out that the above thread dates back to November of 2007. The crime stats from C-D on Oak Island show that there has not been a murder since 2007. The C-D crime stats are here, and they are currently about the national average, with no murders, 3 rapes and one robbery in the most current year: https://www.city-data.com/city/Oak-Is...-Carolina.html
While I agree there is probably meth and heroin in use on OI, I think that the average citizen who takes normal precautions and has a home security system does not have to worry.
For a further reality check, the Folly Beach crime statistics are slightly higher than the national average with a fraction of the population.
BTW, your first citation is not readable because C-D is blocking it.

I should have also mentioned that Carolina Beach is much more of a year round population. Nearby Kure Beach also has many more year rounders than it used to. Some of this was due to the economy that dropped prices at the beach considerably and Wilmington area residents bought up some of that supply from people using these properties as 2nd homes. I would say the full year rental market at CB also increased.
Thanks guys, I'm going to add Carolina Beach and OI to our map when we come down! All the info is much appreciated!
