I didn't know of a thread that is keeping up with NC 12 on Bodie/Pea/Hatteras.

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) approved the revised Environmental Assessment for the Rodanthe Bridge.

A new permanent bridge for N.C. 12 in northern Rodanthe, will be a 2.4-mile-long known as a “jug handle,” extending from the southern end of the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge over the Pamlico Sound into Rodanthe.

That will leave approximately 10 miles of road between Oregon Inlet and Rodanthe. Including the temporary "bridge".

Interesting. If this is built, I assume the next time a breach, new inlet, cuts the OB at this point, they will just leave it. A few hundred years down the road the OB will be all man made.

The outer banks naturally shift with time. They can survive sea level rises if man leaves them alone. The highway obstructs the naturally shifting sand of the outer banks leading them to erode.

Try the OBXconnection.com forum. There is anything about the Outer Banks that you would ever want to know, and then some. Including a little on this subject. I am from down that way and enjoy this forum.
