Does anyone know of any good places to camp along the coast? What are your experiences?

You can camp out on the north end of carolina beach. You can drive out there if you have 4-wheel drive, or you can park and walk. They used to allow fires, but I believe they are now prohibited.

I've found that on certain times, like weekdays, it is somewhat secluded and lots of fun. Other times, like on a Saturday in July, it is crowded like a downtown sidewalk, and a major hassle.

The folks I've met out there have been marines, construction workers, bikers, surfers, college kids - not the most family oriented place.

If your looking to stay on the north side of the cheasapeake bridge on the eastern shore i would say Cherry Stone Camp ground. They have cabins , tent & trailer sites. They have game room , cafe, tennis & basketball courts, paddle boats, golf cart & bike rentals, country store, fishing peers, live music on weekends and alot of special event weeks. My kids love it. If your going to the outer banks nc the i would say Cape hatteris camp ground, not as much to do but they have the ocean/sound pool, game room etc...

White Oak Campground is small, quiet on the river (not too far from the beach though), modern and very nice. Great option for family.
