Bouncing this back up to say we settled on OBX for this trip and are leaving Friday. Considering the hurricane issues in Wilmington and other areas, OBX was a lucky call but I do hope to get to a revitalized Wilmington and other areas in the future.
We have tons to do with hiking, kayaking, canoeing, general sightseeing, the wild horses and will be all over the area from Currituck on down, Dismal Swamp, and a scenic drive to Portsmouth, VA if we can fit it in. Would love suggestions of specific places to eat if you have any. We'll handle most or all breakfasts ourselves just because it's easier but lunch and dinner options are wide open. I know it's a tourist area but non-touristy places would be a plus.

Where exactly are you staying/looking for restaurant recs?
We're staying in Elizabeth City and would love a recommendation there if you have one. Other than that, pretty much anywhere from Currituck down to Manteo. We're playing each day by ear, letting weather be the deciding factor for what to do and see that day. Talked to the kayak/horse place and they said to call when we get there, no need to book before. We can do a lot of things walking around in the rain but that one we want a nice day - looking ahead at weather it seems other than our drive day tomorrow we're in luck.
