Has anyone heard about damage in that area, particularly in the village of Sunset Beach (on the mainland)?

There's a facebook group for that:

I think the town of Sunset Beach has posted updates on facebook too.

I live in Southport. We evacuated but have maintained contact with neighbors. Lots of damage in town - trees down, power lines down, water main break, flooding. Significant damage to businesses. My neighborhood is about 2-1/2 miles from the riverfront. We just got power power back (it's been out since 6:30 am Friday). We are not in a flood zone but there is water running briskly down the streets. Pondsare overflowed. Thankfully it has not encroached on our homes as yet. A few neighbors have structural damage to roofs resulting in ceilings falling, water inside etc. multiple homes have roof shingles and siding off.

I'm anxious to get back and see things first hand but it may be several days before roads are passable

According to OIB's FB page, they were very fortunate to only get some flooding and minor damage.
