Considering driving down from the Triad to Calabash for some fried seafood. A few questions. What are some good places to consider? Are the restaurants open year around or are they just seasonal?
We have enjoyed Captain Nance's. I will suggest avoiding ones with only outdoor tables, as the weather is frigid here. I second the suggestion to call ahead, as many may be open only on weekends.
Calabash Seafood Hut, Beck's and Ella's are also very good.
A few years ago, I put Ella's on the list of possible places to try, I must have seen something about it on UNC-TV. I looked up the Waterfront one, that is intriguing.

If I make the trip, it would be something in April or May (before memorial day) or in Sept/October. I've read/seen about the soft shell crab season, so that might influence things.

Ella's, Becks, Colemans and Callahans are all original Calabash restaurants owners. The Callahans bought the Colemans Original Seafood restaurant and opened Oyster Rock. They also own Clarks in Little River, the Boundary House and Callahans of Calabash (a very popular gift and Christmas Shop). They all serve soft shell in season and they are open year round.
The Waterfront Seafood Shack is right on the intercoastal and is outdoor dining only. They also own the Calabash Fishing Fleet.
These places are all on the intercoastal so they get their catch pretty much fresh. We enjoy going directly to the dock and buying shrimp off the boat.
