I've got a place in Topsail Beach, looking into water softeners, wondering if anyone has any experience with adding one to their home, specifically in TB since Surf City gets water from a different source (I think). Water seems hard, leaves deposits all over, spots on everything, dishwasher getting buildups etc...

Looking for installer recommendations, DIY experiences, results after adding equipment.

TIA

Do you get water from ONWASA? We are also annoyed with the water quality in Sneads Ferry. It leaves cruddy deposits in the sinks and on the fixtures, rings around the toilet bowl that are impossible to clean.

We have discussed getting a whole-house water conditioner, but the equipments costs would be a couple thousand dollars for our size house. So far, it hasn't seemed cost-justified.

We would also be interested in knowing if anyone hase had a positive experience with installing water conditioners. The PelicanWater system looks appropriate and fairly easy for some experienced with PVC.

I should probably be able to name the source, but it's not crystal clear as we are billed by the Town of Topsail Beach directly and that bill also covers garbage collection, recycling, facility charges, and water. Looks like it comes through the Pender County Utilities Surface Water Treatment Plant from pulled from the Cape Fear River and is purchased from the Lower Cape Fear Water and Sewer Authority. How's that for convoluted?

Thing is with all these water utility companies, they do the bare minimum required, which is absolutely not enough. Any changes and they jack the rates up. Water in the Cape Fear is tainted at best with Gen-X. Not sure why the water is so hard, it comes from different wells, but can, and should be treated to address hardness.

I don't really want to put a treatment system on my house in Pender, but I also don't want to see appliances, plumbing fixtures, shower glass treatments and anything else that water touches damaged by hard water deposits, stains and spots. It's annoying. It'll cost $3-4K to put a softener and filter on the house, more depending on what you want (or what needs) to be filtered out. Then there's the ongoing maintenance to the system, adding salt, reconditioning the canisters etc...sucks.

I certainly would not go with a company that needs to add salt every three month and requires you to be there for the service. I have heard that's what Cullinane does. I also would not use Rainsoft, as they seem to be very expensive.

I would look for one where the canisters last for years. Some companies will test the water free for you.
