We are trying to decide between Compass Pointe and Saint James as our retirement destination. We currently live in a NYC suburb. We enjoy going to the theater, concerts, and movies. Are these available in the Wilmington area or must one travel to Myrtle Beach or Raleigh? Thanks.

In my opinion, this is the difference between St James and Compass Pointe. Having the cultural scene of Downtown Wilmington a few miles away compared to about 45 minutes is huge for someone form a bigger city area. Now if you want to be closer to the ocean, St James makes more sense.

Wilmington, culturally, is one of the best cities per capita in North Carolina. The City is even addressing one of its most pressing items culturally by building the North Waterfront park, which will be run by Live Nation. Having 12-15 large concerts by national artists is something you had to go to Raleigh or Charlotte for. The Wilson Center was a huge add to the market, and compliments Thalian Hall really well. The Community Arts center in the old USO building is a community gem.

Thanks. Choosing between proximity to the ocean vs. culture is one of the issues making our decision between Compass Pointe and Saint James difficult. Too bad San Diego is so expensive (and quite a long drive from NYC).
