Hello ,
We are planning on moving this Summer and many of the homes are in the Eugene Ashley HS district. I have read that John T Hoggard rates higher and if not driving into Wilmington for work that Topsail HS in Hampstead is excellent. I would appreciate any feedback for an incoming freshman. I have heard that some of the High Schools there are taking in many new students with the influx of new residents. Thank you

So far I have refrained from commenting because I am not a parent of a high-schooler. I suspect that Hoggard and Topsail, as well as Ashley, are experiencing growth problems. You might try calling each school and ask about the anticipated average freshman class size.

I have read the online reviews of each school, and they all show complaints about teachers not being responsive, etc.

If my child were academically inclined or a high achiever, I would try to find a house in the Hoggard district. If she is social and sports-minded, I think the other schools would work about as well, as the ratings are close.

I assume you are aware that the Greatschools rating are mostly based on standardized test scores, which tend to favor high-income families. Niche.com does a different type of rating, and it rates the teachers at Ashley better than the teachers at Hoggard. (I have no idea what goes into that rating.)

Thank you again for all your advice ! Eugene Ashley HS seems to be the option now based on real estate availability. Just from what I am reading lately these schools seem to be getting a large influx of new students.

I can't answer your questions, but this is a good source of data (not first hand experience) for schools in NC:

I can speak from experience of having kids in New Hanover County schools.

I would have no trouble sending my kids to any of the New Hanover County High Schools.

Yes, Ashley is perfectly fine and actually has the nicest facilities of the 4
