It's free and has buses, my son goes to the one in "Havelock" ( in quotes b/c even though it has a Havelock address, it's in the community of harlowe). The ones in Newport and Beaufort would be closest to you if u live in MHC. Not sure if you'd qualify, b/c it's income based, but it won't hurt to apply. Don't let the fact that programs goal is "overall goal of increasing the school readiness of young children in low-income families." It's a real good program. Speaking of the one the Goddette Center in Harlowe, which is the only one I have personal knowledge of. Alot of the kids that go there are military and quiet as it's kept, most of the others that go there actually don't meet the income requirements, but applied using false info or a grandmothers income or something. For military I think it just includes base pay, no entitlements like BAH/BAS. Honestly my son doesn't qualify to go there, but since I was stationed in Quantico, VA, whilst my wife was in Havelock, she just applied saying she had no income in her household.
The one in Newport has cams so u check it out. The links on the sidebar of their webpage.
Also, select elementary schools have pre-K, for 4 yrs old, but I don't know which ones do in carteret county. you may need to contact the school board.
