Two 27 year olds and Shallotte, NC.....would year round be feasible? (Wilmington: cheap apartment, for rent)

My roomie and friend are looking to move, and we are considering Shallotte, or anywhere below Wilmington. We're both 27, and neither one of us has an extreme fondness for clubs, etc. I love the beach, and am a photographer/whatever else I have to do to pay the rent. My friend is finishing up her degree in accounting.
We would need a 2 bed/2 bath apartment, preferably with water and sewer, w/d hookups and a dishwasher.....Anything else is window dressing. if anyone could give us an idea on utilites, general area living wise, and whether actually living in Shallotte year round would be feasible, we would greatly appreciate it. Our budget would be around 700-750 a month for rent. Less if possible, or even buying a decent condo.

Birch Pond apartments are located in Shallotte, and would be a good place to start if you are renting. They can give you an idea on utilities, etc.
If you are considering buying, and haven't owned anything in the past 3 years, it is a wonderful opportunity to take advantage of the $8000.00 tax credit, scheduled to end November 31, 2009.
Shallotte has really expanded just in the past 5 years, however, I am not sure about the employment picture there. It is mostly service jobs, tourism and retail, that you will find.
The area has attracted affluent folks from up North, however, where you decide to live will be basically up to you.
I enjoyed living there for the 6 months that I did, until I discovered Southport, which has more of a small town feel, and closer proximity to Wilmington and Carolina beach.

There are no jobs in Shallotte, so unless you have some money saved you won't last long there. You would do better to look in Little River, about 15 minutes south of Shallotte, it is close to N. Myrtle Beach and you would have a better chance of work there.
You will have no problem finding a cheap apartment in Shallotte but finding employment will be challenging unless you're content with an entry level/minimum wage service job like fast food, convenient store cashier, ect. Apartment prices will be slightly higher closer to Myrtle Beach or Wilmington but there will be more employment opportunities. Also, there is basically no recreation in Shallotte although it is close to the beach.
Seems like there's a newspaper in Shalotte, your photography skills may be something they'd like, if you can stand a regular job. And accounting, gosh, the bigger hotels up and down the beach, something along those lines ought to come up.

I can stand a regular job quite well, and I prefer it. I'm just not picky about how I pay my bills. I like simplicity and quiet, and the beach(and all it offers), would be a perfect muse.
Ironically enough, I lived in Asheville for 4 years until the rising apartment prices and the decay of downtown forced me to leave. Downtown Asheville has become exactly like Atlanta in regards to homeless people, and while I feel sorry for them, I no longer felt safe walking after dark. If Fairview had been nearer to a lake, I would built a home there....always loved Fairview and Fletcher.
