Going to be on Hatteras in a couple of weeks and most likely will be bringing my mini poodle. Does anyone know of any pet boarding facilities nearby? We may want to do some sightseeing where we won't be able to take him with us. Tried searching the Internet but couldn't find anything.

There's a vet around MP 5 where you could probably board your dog, it's a bit of a distance from Hatteras, I think there's another vet more toward the Wright Bros. monument (I just vaguely recall that one, having only driven past it) but it's still a distance from where you'll be staying - there's also a doggie bakery/gift shop around MP 5 (Salty Paws) and the owner might be able to give you info, also the owners (Outer Barks - Robin/Ken) of the doggie gift shop in Duck at Scarborough Faire might have some leads for you (even though it's quite a distance). We would bring a crate and would leave ours in the cottage if we went out to eat or to the beach (the other cottages were a distance away so we didn't have to worry about barking etc), would leave the tv or radio on and it worked out fine. I think there's also petsitters in the area who could come and take him out for a potty break and some play time if you're going to be gone a long time.

PS Just make sure your dog is wearing a collar or harness and tags w/ current info (ph #'s etc) just in case he gets loose etc - no one anticipates it (and knock wood, it's never happened to us there and we've been many times) but these guys can be fast and can unexpectedly bolt.

Thanks for the information Honeycrisp. We'll be in Waves, first time there so I'm not familiar with the area and distances. We have 2 poodles, one HATES going anywhere, the younger one just went on his first (2 night) camping trip and was good--he seemed to enjoy it. And I liked having him with me. Most campgrounds say----no leaving pets alone-----but I wonder how much this is followed. Also, recently got both dogs new tags with our home and cell phone numbers on them. To make this campground related, anyone have a problem leaving a dog in their camper? Crated, A/C on, TV on, TT---he's not a barker unless egged on by his older dog sister.
