We love the Myrtle Beach area, but don't want to live in a tourist town. We have found Tabor City, NC to be a great place to live. Tabor City is in Columbus County and is just over the NC/SC state line. It is 30 minutes to the beach, has very affordable housing and many nice people. Lake Tabor is beautiful. The new prison is a major employer in the area, and they are always looking for people. If you are looking for small town living which is close to the beach, check out Tabor City!

interesting post but it begs the question:

1. Is the new prison looking for employees or prisoners - just wanted to be sure.
2. are the prisoners escaping and that is the people they are looking for?

sorry - could not resist.............

after a very long year in and out of columbus county, i'll refrain from any other editorial comments.........

Are there any rentals in tabor city in the $600 range but in a nice section. We also need to know if they are big dog friendly. At least two bedrooms and one bath. Brick home preferably. No oil heat. Heat Pump with air.

I don't know if EveAtTheBeach is still on City-Data, but I had the misfortune to take a wrong turn and go through Tabor City a couple of years ago. It was pretty depressing. Check it out on google streetview and drive around town a little bit.

The same Tabor City that has the sketchy Economy Inn to greet you when you come down after the merge of 410 and 701 so you can rest a spell in case you're too tired or lazy to drive a half hour more to North Myrtle Beach? And always has local traffic slowing down the bypass that's supposedly for people who want to avoid going into town? Thanks, but I think I'll pass.
