I started getting into metals about 8 or 9 years ago when I started discovering things about the dollar and how it used to be backed by silver in the era of Kennedy and now is nothing more than a 'debt note'.
Also how this country may indeed revert back to the gold standard and the bartering system makes metals my paramount investment

Just read recently that the new 'Obama' coins they are selling on TV are really just fifty cent pieces with a sticker on them! They're pushing them for what, fifteen bucks or so? They aren't worth more than fifty cents. Buyer beware.

NEVER buy coins or investment gold/silver from anyone advertising on TV. It's ALL worthless junk. My favorite is the one selling Morgan dollars in "brilliant un-circulated fine" (BU Fine) condition. If you know anything about how coins are graded, you know exactly what this means, and you are laughing right along with me.

I think those collector coins are just that...in case the person's popularity goes up then so may the value. Yet to see that with a political figure though

No numismatist would buy that junk. The only people "collecting" those things are people buying for the novelty value. Anyone buying them because they think they'll appreciate are not collectors, they're suckers.

Default Learn First

Collecting gold and silver combines investment, hobby and aesthetics in an extraordinary, if not unique, combination. But there are terrible pitfalls fo the uninformed. Posters have advised against buying from television ads. That's good advice, but it's not enough.

You need to learn. A really good place is www.kitco.com. Kitco is primarily investment, but they have a forum, and there are all sorts of things there. A great publication about collecting is Coin World. It's really indispensable.

Biggest asset to coin gold and silver is there is no refinery or smelting fee when you sell.

I have collected coins for many years as a hobby. I discovered that a lot of coins I bought, were not what they were supposed to be!! I purchased some coins through Auctions and Estate Sales. In 1986 the first American Eagle Coin was made at the US Mint. From that year on, I have done most of My buying from the US Mint. Today most of my collection I sold because I knew that something happened to Me, that my children would have no idea what the coins were worth. I had my fun!! If You are thinking about buying coins, go to the US Mint.gov.
