I think that most people collect stamps for fun, not for investment or profit. Some people enjoy collecting international stamps of places they have been or off of letter sent to them by friends or international business contacts. Or others collect by theme... like animals, birds, flowers or people.
It's just that stamps are produced in such mass quantities now and for many decades... so none will ever actually be rare enough to be worth more than their face value (if unused).
I think that the most beautiful stamps are the older ones that were printed by engraved plates and with the dry glue on the back to moisten. I don't care for the new self stick stamps and their cheaper lithographed printing process.
Otherwise, I feel that it's not really appropriate for our US post office to encourage stamp collecting of unused stamps. Because then they are encouraging people to pay for stamps that they will never use for mailing.
