Overnight ratings for Alabama’s 21-point shutout of LSU in the National Championship Game were the lowest in the history of the Bowl Championship Series.
Lots of folks didn't want to watch a rematch and I don't blame them.. but that doesn't mean that the 2 best teams were not playing.. because I think everyone that paid attention agrees that Alabama and LSU were the 2 best teams from the 2011 College football season..
Don't be mad at the SEC, Alabama or LSU, be mad at the BCS.. be very mad.
Why can't we just rotate conferences in the NCG each year to ensure that every team gets a shot at the title ? Harvard should get a shot at it as well as Norfolk State for winning the MEAC.
other regions would have turned in for a compelling matchup - what is a bit telling is that this game only picked up about a point to a point and a half of additional rating from their game earlier in the season
ratings were down across the board on average this year - the BCS/NCAA needs to take a look about how they are presenting their post season ...... it seems broken in almost every way, shape & form
I do agree that the match-up itself is partly to blame for the bad ratings, but another problem is also the exclusivity that BCS has with ESPN. That was a great deal for the ESPN side of ABC/Disney, and it frees up ABC's main network to show their crappy regular programming, but for BCS visibility overall, it was a bad, bad deal. Serves them right for trying to force ordinary people to pay for sports that we all used to watch on TV for no additional charge. I know that most people have cable right now, but that's not the point; it's the principle of the whole thing. Everything now in modern U.S. sports is about hyping sh*t up and making people pay twice as much for a product that's not twice as good. I can't blame people for saying screw it.
...and Birmingham and New Orleans were the two largest markets that the game turned in the highest ratings - what a surprise.
I'm going to go out on a limb and say that if it had been perhaps USC vs Michigan or Norte Dame that the ratings would have been higher. But I'm no expert.

Agreed. The National Championship should be determined by who generates the highest TV ratings.
