Maybe a question should be, who took off school, went to work, and regretted it? I have worked with many smart people, who were by passed on raises, and promotions, not because they could not do the job, but because all they had was a high school diploma. One man in particular...he had worked his way up a corporate ladder, being a loss prevention, security specialist...stuck...because he did not have a degree...even a degree in physed would have helped him move up. He was bypassed by a guy who had worked for the company less time than he had...he had even trained the guy...and that guy ended up being his supervisor...because of two letters...B.A.

School is not for me. You don't really need school to get a good job. I know a lot of people who didn't go to school and have a good job.

If you know all this, and school is not for you, why are you asking us?

I happen to think this is a bad idea, though you read a lot of advisors touting a "gap" year.

As far as people taking a semester off and not going back, only 54% of all college entrants graduate within six years of matriculating. Who knows how many planned to go back but didn't?
