I'll get this to our students. We are a top basketball school, and one of our grads skipped college to go straight into the NBA where he's doing great after 7 years. However, he's the only one of our grads to really make it in the NBA. They changed the rules not long after he went pro so that it's now much more difficult to make the jump from high school to pros.
While basketball is a great way to trade talent for an education, most of our grads don't make it in the pros. A couple are enjoying profitable careers overseas, including a valedictorian who is appalled at the changes wrought by NCLB that have reduced our school to almost nothing but a test-prep center. He understands the value of an education, even though he left college to go pro himself. He changed his major from game design to finance, and will likely finish his undergrad and graduate degrees once his playing days are over. The tragedy is that the current administration won't let him talk to the kids at school. Why, I don't know. I think I'll send him this link too. He very likely knows Shaq, now that I think about it.
I think it would be inappropriate to mention them by name. I thought twice even about mentioning them at all. You can DM me if you like, but I prefer to respect their privacy.
The point I was making is that a lot of our students are heavily recruited by Division I schools, some beginning in middle school. It helps to have people whom they respect tell them that for success in the pros is important to get the best possible education while still in high school. I think that they will listen to what Shaquille O'Neal says. At least, I hope so.
I think this is great. Too often, people look at successful Black men and think, "I wonder if he's a basketball player." Hopefully this will help shift that assumption into realizing that Black men can be successful in other ways too.
I like Shaq. I even liked his rap album back in the day. Not kidding.
