Thanks for the advice guys, reading more on the site has certainly made me realize it would be in my best interest to find one before I graduate. I'm sure I can shift around enough during the summer to be able to get one

Internships paired with all the academic research you're doing with the PhD students and professors in colleges are the best ways to learn about your field and make sure you're getting a solid college education. The classes are not all that important in terms of learning... just for the grades.

As for the unpaid internships I know there is some grumble about them being legal and what not. But if the only way to gain relevant experience in your field is the unpaid internship, then you might have to go unpaid.

In this day and age, yes.

That is assuming it is a useful internship. Working a job is also helpful.

Back in the day they called it co-op.
I did 2 semesters. The company asked me to stay another term.
I had one last class and graduated during that last term and the company asked me to stay on as a new hire.

It's not only valuable real world experience that you can put on a resume but can also lead to a job.
Many a co-op that I trained ended up getting hired one, two and three years after they co-op'd at my company.
