Why Teach and Study English? : The New Yorker

Great article in The New Yorker about English majors .

From the article:

"You choose a major, or a life, not because you see its purpose, which tends to shimmer out of sight like an oasis, but because you like its objects."

That's cool and everything, but why is everything always about English majors? What about the history and philosophy majors that get a bum rap too?

I totally agree. I seriously considered majoring in history. Humanities and social science majors are given a ridiculously hard time - told that they are wasting their time.

I can't imagine majoring in something as dull as math or science.

I agree, after all, you like what you like. The whole thing is that since the economy went down the toilet, there has been this war against liberal arts grads by employers it seems like.
