I've been completely out of it for 20+ years. I still subscribe but to an online edition -- same newspaper but without the paper and ink.

For at least the last 15 years, I haven't picked up a paper/ink newspaper except for the free ones they give you when you travel.

When the NY Times went behind a pay wall and I got tired of clearing cookies, I started reading and watching free news from overseas The Guardian, BBC, ABC, NHK, SBS. The local paper is still free online but frankly those Patch websites do a better job of keeping the news local.

I guess since you do, all English majors make as much as Finance VPs.

OP, I did not read the full thread. I have a B.A. in English and I work in advertising. An English degree is very broad. Figure out what interests you and try to find internships related to it, it will help you build a resume and in turn find a career you like.

I have a similar degree and worked at low-paying jobs (including dog-walker and waitress) and then eventually found something professional but low paying - hated that with a passion, then went to school to get credentials to teach ESL. It was nearly impossible to find a "real" job because I didn't have any direction - no experience, nothing to make me appeal to any particular type of industry, no reason to give for wanting to have any particular job with any particular group - it was like starting from nothing. And in the pre-internet days a network was much more important because there really was no way to find out about jobs except for the help wanted ads. I actually got my first job through a friend, and my last job more or less by accident.
