There must be some guidance. Have you checked the department web site? Or ask more senior grad students what it was like.

Giving you nothing to go on at all doesn't make any sense. Comp exams vary widely from school to school and department to department.

I thought so as well. This is my second Masters degree and on my first we received a study guide and were told to focus on that. This one all I am getting is to bring in my materials books and papers that have been used throughout my program. That in itself sounds odd as this would be quite a bit of materials to bring in.

I will go by the office and ask someone else, maybe their answer will be different.

it's almost impossible to say without knowing the subject and format... you're probably way better off talking to alums at your program than asking here

fwiw, at my PhD program we have a series of subject specific comps, and it's typical to just cram for a week or so for a comp, assuming you've studied the material before. otherwise you can just (re-)take the class corrresponding to that comp and get a gimme, assuming you pass the class with a good grade. but many schools are very, very different
