The interstate (I-75) goes right through UFs city, Gainesville. ^^
coming from Jacksonville and places north on east coast, you would take a state highway b/t Jacksonville and Gainesville. Looks like at least 1 hour on that.
for me, Gainesville's location 1.5 to 2 hours from the beach kind of negates one of the big reasons to live in Florida. if i lived in Florida, i would want to be closer to the beach than that.

Thanks for the help everyone! I have thinking about it more, and going to visit Texas and see the Texas schools I was accepted to (UT Austin and TA&M). Those are the ones I have not visited yet.
Being a social studies teacher is not impossible. If you are flexible with location, you'll be fine. Just don't expect to be able to choose where you live early on.
I majored in history and turned out fine.
I recommend, though, choosing a minor carefully. The combination of what you can teach or coach in addition to history will be what gets you that first job.
One of my fellow majors became teacher of the year in a big Texas city a few years ago. In a big district, that's no minor accomplishment.
She had minored in kinesiology though, and being able to coach volleyball was what got her foot in the door.
All the schools you're looking at are large state flagships. At the undergraduate level, there won't be a huge difference in their history departments to be honest. It will depend on where you want to be after graduation, since your teacher's certification will be for a particular state.
I voted OSU, but that was before seeing you want to be in Georgia. I'd probably say UF, but consider UGA. Depends on how many employers from Atlanta travel to UF to recruit. That said, priorities change. Who knows, maybe in 4 years you'll want to live in South Dakota.
out of state tutition going kill you, triple the price
